William Pike Challenge

The William Pike Challenge

Do you have what it takes to step out of your comfort zone? Well that’s exactly what the William Pike challenge encourages you to do. This challenge was made by William Pike to help you learn new skills indoors and outdoors.

William Pike created the William Pike Challenge after losing his leg in a serious accident. Even though he now has a prosthetic leg he still can do the things he loves. He is stepping out of his comfort zone every day and that is what the William Pike Challenge is all about.

The William Pike Challenge consists of three main aspects: Passion Project, Community Service, and Outdoor Activities.  The Passion Project is all about learning new skills. You can join a sports team, learn an instrument, or even learn to cook.

Community Service focuses on giving back to your community. You can go on a rubbish clean up, mow your neighbours lawns, or walk someone’s dog and even though this may not be fun, you are helping your community more than you may think.

Last but not least Outdoor Activities. These activities are scheduled by your teacher or principal. Some of these planned activities may be something like: rock climbing, a tramp, a bike ride, or maybe even a walk up a mountain.

You have to do 5 outdoor activities and 20 hours of both community service and passion projects and even if this seems like a lot, when you are finished the hours will have seemed to fly by and you will have realised that you have been pushed out of your comfort zone.

Not only does the William Pike Challenge push you out of your comfort zone but it also gives you new experiences that might not have had otherwise.

Without the William Pike Challenge I don’t think I would have ever experienced Rock Climbing. But it isn’t just rock climbing that the William Pike Challenge has introduced me to, it is also Rafting and Skiing which can be very difficult to do otherwise. When I first went skiing I was very nervous about what to do and how to do it. Over the trip I stepped out of my comfort zone and began to try and ski down the slope faster and faster. The next year when we went back, I wasn’t afraid anymore. I even took it a step further and went down the steeper slope many times.

The William Pike Challenge will give you opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people and have fun while doing it. The William Pike Challenge has helped us gain confidence and we are sure that this program will help you step out of your comfort zone.

Extremism Paragraph

Extremism Paragraph

We believe that online security threats should be taken more seriously. We think that Giles Dexter is writing about a very real threat that needs to be mitigated and stopped. The cyber threat that these online security breaches pose is simply unacceptable and needs to be recognised and diminished. To lessen these online security issues we need to strengthen our passwords and raise awareness around the topic. This is a very serious issue and needs to be addressed and treated as soon as possible. The toll that this has on our vulnerable children and elderly is outstanding. We find a topic like this atrocious to have continued on this long and need to find a long term solution.

Persuasive writing 2023

This year we have been doing persuasive writing about all sorts of subjects. One thing I have enjoyed is writing about children bringing their phones to school. I chose this topic because if you read it you will see that I am 100% against phones being brought to school. WALT: persuade the reader to believe what the writer believes.

Here is a link to all of my persuasive writing over the year:

My Holiday Lie

I have written about my holiday but one of my paragraphs is a lie. If you think you know which one it is, put it in the comments.

My Holiday Chase

My family and I went a lot of places during the school holidays

Cass Lagoon Saddle Track

As I was walking along on the Cass saddle track, my family and our friends cut down through the scrub next to the tarn and we set up our camp next to the tarn. Charles and I then put on our thermals and we continued trying to sneak up on our families. The next day we went to the Cass Lagoon saddle A-frame Hut and then went up Mount Bruce. That ended up taking up the entire day. We tramped back to the car park the next day.

Soccer camp

This last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, myself, Cassidy and Barrett went down to Hokitika to do a soccer camp with Rob who is a soccer coach. We ended up learning a lot in those three days and it warmed us up for the soccer season.

Hawaii

On the first week of break we went to Hawaii on the island of Kauai and we stayed at a resort called Timbers Kauai. Over the next couple of days we went boogie boarding at Kalapaki beach and we went fishing in a lagoon. I caught thirty fish over the course of three days. We had also gone kayaking in that lagoon.

Nina Valley Track

Yesterday and the day before my Mom and I went into Lewis Pass to Nina Valley Track and we hiked 10 kilometres through creeks, bush and mud and when we finally got the hut there were two bunks left which was perfect because I didn’t want to camp. That night I slept really well and we had hot chocolate and oatmeal for breakfast.

Moana

Moana

While the ngaru hit the rocks, the seaweed swayed in the current.

Happily, an ika swam towards the dancing worm, unaware of what lay ahead of him.

Meanwhile another ika darted in and out of the rocks, his head frantically shaking, looking for predators.

Toka littered the ocean floor, making hiding spots for minnows escaping predators.

Gracefully, the stingray glided across the sea floor, titiro for crustaceans.

Hawaii

Hawaii

We went to Hawaii with our Grandparents(who live in the States), at the beginning of school break. We went because we haven’t seen them since December when we moved to New Zealand.

Plane Ride

To get to Hawaii you have to 1. Drive to Christchurch, 2. Fly to Auckland, 3. Fly to Honolulu, 4. Fly to Lihue (Capital of Kauai) and take a shuttle to Timbers Kauai. The Plane ride to Honolulu from Auckland was 8 and ½ hours long. On the Air New Zealand flight there are little TVs built into the back of the seat in front of you so you can watch movies the whole time. The movie I watched was the bad guys and it was very funny

Kauai

Kauai is a medium sized island but one of the most beautiful. Along the Na Pali coastline there are waterfalls and caves. One of the caves is sacred because it is where the kings got crowned. Somewhere along the Coast is the place where they filmed a scene in Jurassic park. In Timbers ( The hotel we stayed in ) there is a dock in the lagoon where you can go fishing. I caught 31 fish in five days but we didn’t eat them. It was catch and release. The biggest fish I caught was 15 centimetres and it was a rainbow coloured fish. The smallest fish I caught was a tiny baby fish and it was just flopping around on the dock.

Dukes

Dukes is a restaurant named after the famous surfer,
Duke Kahanamoku. That night I had a cheeseburger and fries and it tasted so cheesy. For dessert we had a chocolate lava cake and it was so delicious . The ice cream had little chocolate cups in it. I thought I wouldn’t like it, but when I tried it I was proven wrong.

Catamaran

A catamaran is a double hulled boat and we rode on it down the Na Pali coast. After around 45 minutes we stopped to go in the water. On the back of the boat there was a slide, which we rode into the water, also when we were sliding down it, the captain of the boat sprayed us with a hose. On the way back to the port the boat was rocking up and down like a cradle because the swells were very humongous.

Matariki And Her Stars

Matariki And Her Stars

Matariki is a cluster of stars that appears in the sky in June and July of each year. During this time people in New Zealand celebrate Matariki, signifying the end of the Maori new year. In other parts of the world the Matariki star cluster is called Pleiades. When we see Matariki we know that it’s time to harvest the crops and plant new one’s for the next year. Each star has an important job to do. Some of the stars in the cluster are Waitī, Waitā, Waipuna-ā-rangi and Ururangi.

Waitī
Waitī is the twin sister of Waitā and she is tied to freshwater and all the kai sources in freshwater. Waitī means sweet or melodious in Maori. Wai means water in Māori and since she is tied to water it suits her.

Waitā
Waitā is associated with Tangaroa (the God of the sea) and all the food sources in the sea/ocean. Waitā is a twin to Waiti, shining on sources of salt water and protecting all life sustained within it. Wai means water in Maori and ta means salt, so together it is salt water.

Waipuna-ā-rangi
Waipuna-ā-rangi is connected to rain, storms and bad weather while Ururangi is the wind. She is in charge of nourishing the land. She decides what the weather will be like throughout the year. The meaning of Waipuna-ā-rangi is water that pools in the sky.

Ururangi
Ururangi is the star which determines the nature of the winds for the year. It was only by harnessing the power of the wind that Māori were able to travel to Aotearoa in the very beginning. He is the god of good attitude and that is why he is above all the other people on the Matariki charts.

As you can see, the stars of the Matariki cluster are really important to everyone and everything.
